GMIT is an organization engaged in the organizational and professional field of Soil Science students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University. GMIT was established in 1978 by Soil Science students with the first chairman being Mr. Muhajirin. Different from most other professional organizations in universities that commonly use the prefix Association / Association / Union, etc., but the Unand Soil Science Professional organization uses the word "Group" and this is the only professional association using the word "Group". This is because in that year the Student Senate Council was suspended, as stated in Ministerial Decree No.28 which resulted in student organizations at that time not having a forum to channel their aspirations. To avoid this, the founders of GMIT agreed to name this association using the name "GROUP". In addition, the number of Earth Science students at that time was still small so that the use of the word Group would be more appropriate than the word association which tends to connote having many members.
